Overview of HDPE (PE100) Sheets
PE100 is the highest standard designation in the polyethylene pressure-pipe family and represents a genuine step up from general-purpose HDPE. The designation refers to a minimum required strength (MRS) of 10.0 MPa, verified by long-term hydrostatic testing rather than by a single short-term measurement. Sheet produced from PE100 compound therefore carries the same exceptional resistance to slow crack growth and rapid crack propagation that makes PE100 pipe the global standard for gas and water distribution.
What the PE100 Designation Actually Means
The Three Generations of PE
Polyethylene pressure materials are classified by their minimum required strength over a 50-year design life. First-generation PE63 and second-generation PE80 have largely been superseded, because PE100 achieves higher pressure ratings from the same wall thickness. That means a PE100 component can either carry more pressure at the same section, or the same pressure with a thinner, lighter section.
Bimodal Molecular Structure
The performance of PE100 comes from its bimodal molecular architecture, in which a high-molecular-weight fraction provides strength and crack resistance while a low-molecular-weight fraction delivers processability. The result is a material that combines stiffness and toughness in a way earlier unimodal polyethylenes could not achieve.
Slow Crack Growth and Rapid Crack Propagation
Two failure modes dominate the long-term performance of polyethylene under pressure: slow crack growth, which develops over years at stress concentrations and notches, and rapid crack propagation, which can travel at high speed through a pressurised section. PE100 is specifically engineered to resist both, which is why it is trusted in buried gas mains and potable water networks where access for repair is costly.
Why Specify PE100 Sheet Rather Than Pipe
Pipe is optimised for conveying fluids along a route. Sheet is optimised for machined and fabricated components: flanges, spacers, wear pads, tank linings, backing plates, machined seals and structural parts where the material must be cut, drilled or formed to a complex shape. PE100 sheet brings the same base material performance into flat-stock form for fabrication.
Performance Characteristics
PE100 sheet has a density above 0.95 g/cm3, essentially zero water absorption, excellent chemical resistance across a broad range of acids, alkalis and salts, and high impact strength even at low temperature. It is stabilised against UV degradation for outdoor service and can be butt welded or extrusion welded to build larger assemblies.
Selection Guidance
Specify PE100 sheet where the component combines pressure or sustained load with long service life and a low tolerance for failure: water and gas infrastructure fittings, chemical containment components, machined wear parts and critical fabricated assemblies. Where these demanding conditions do not apply, standard HDPE sheet delivers excellent value. To estimate panel weight before ordering, use our free plastic sheet weight calculator.
